Hanukkah

Hanukkah, an eight-day winter holiday, is derived from the solstice celebrations of ancient people. Hanukkah, which means “dedication” is based on the legend of Judah Maccabee and his followers who successfully resisted the imposition of Greek culture and religion, and the resulting rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem. For Humanistic Jews, Hanukkah is a celebration of human courage, integrity, and hope.

Light the Menorah. Members brought their family menorahs and candles. Candles were lit as part of a humanistic service.

Tikkun Olam

In the spirit of  Tikkun Olam, members and guests brought gifts to donate to a community center in Bridgeport that stocks a “store” where children “shop” for gifts for their family.
