A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Steve Ulman (203)727-8229

At last year’s Annual Meeting, I pledged to talk with every member to find out what makes CHJ compelling. So far, I have only spoken with a handful of you and plan to continue these conversations, now that some of the pressing issues facing the Congregation have subsided. It occurs to me, however, that in exchange for your thoughts, I should share my own.  Read more

Green Eggs and Hamantaschen
We actually didn’t read Dr. Seuss or make green eggs this month, but I couldn’t pass up the clever headline. And because hamantaschen are such a delicious part of our current holiday. It’s Purim! And it’s time for CHJ’s annual Purim Spiel (Play) and Party, which will take place March 8th. The Zahav and Pre-Mitzvah children have been working very hard practicing their lines for the play. The little ones in the Kesef class have been making groggers, noisemakers used to drown out the name of the villain of the Purim story, Haman. We can’t wait to tell you all about it and post photos to our website!

Adult Ed Sunday, March 29  “Jewish painters active in Paris in the 1920s”
Believe it or not spring is coming, and that means it’s also time for our annual visit at Adult Ed by Dr. Deborah Varat for one of her fascinating art history talks.  She is chair of the humanities department at Southern New Hampshire University and will, once again, speak to us about the role of Jews in art history.  This year on March 29 at our Sunday morning Adult Ed program she will profile Jewish painters active in Paris in the 1920s – such as Chagall, Modigliani and Soutine.
Program starts at 10:00 at Bedford Middle School in Westport.   Come at 9:30 to meet Professor Varat and schmooze with bagels and coffee.

Sunday School and Model Seder
MARCH 29 (SUNDAY)

Bedford Middle School, Westport, CT
Sunday School 9:30 – 10:30 Model Seder 10:30 – 11:45

CHJ will hold its annual children’s Seder in celebration of Passover on Sunday morning, March 29, 10:30-11:45 AM, at Bedford Middle School, 88 North Avenue, Westport. Families with children of all ages are invited to attend the model Seder.

Consistent with the practice of Humanistic Judaism, the model Seder contains the stories and elements of a traditional Seder and also offers modern interpretations of the meaning of Passover. The Seder will be followed by a brunch of Passover foods. Please reserve your spot by calling (203) 293-8867 or emailing info@humanisticjews.org by March 20.

ANOTHER FAMILY SEDER

Each year our Congregation gathers for a wonderful, community Passover seder – and YES, spring is coming, and so is Passover.  Here are the details:

We will celebrate Passover at the Red Barn in Westport, at 6 p .m., on Tuesday, April 7th, which is in the middle the Passover holiday period.

The cost is $45/adult, $15/children 12 and younger.*

The dinner choices are:  Atlantic salmon, chicken Francaise, and a vegetarian plate.

Your reservation is made when you send your check (made out to CHJ) to our seder accountant, Barbara Jay – 8 Webb Rd., Westport, 06880.  Please include your meal choices.

Our CHJ haggadah is available on our CHJ website – please print out your own, in color if you wish.

*You may have noticed that the adult price is a fair bit higher than it was last year.  This is partly due to rising costs of food and wine, but mostly due to the very unrealistically low price of last year – we can’t repeat that, but we are offering a large subsidy for children.

It is not too soon to send in your reservation – ready, set, go!

From your seder committee:  Ellie Shafer, Donna Souci, George Rockmore & Mryna Retsky
