The Dead Sea scrolls were written 2,000 years ago and discovered in caves about 70 years ago. All but one are religious texts written on parchment. The exception is the Copper Scroll, which is not a religious text and is written on sheets of copper. It is a guide to buried treasure in the vicinity, including – maybe – the famous lost Ark of the Covenant. Israeli archeologists are trying to use the Copper Scroll to search for the treasure, but forgotten or disappeared landmarks from long ago make it difficult. A colorful amateur treasure hunter has also been searching, and Spielberg may have based Indiana Jones on him in his “Raiders of the Lost Ark” movie.
All of this is set forth in a History Channel video that we will see – “Digging for The Truth, Lost Treasures of the Copper Scroll“. CHJ’s armchair archeologist, Dave Shafer, will also discuss the surprising connection between the biblical Ark of the Covenant, the Holy Grail, and the medieval Philosopher’s Stone featured in the first Harry Potter book. Ancient mysteries, buried treasure, and Indiana Jones – what’s not to like here?
