Through his charismatic storytelling and masterful performance, Theodore Bikel explores Sholom Aleichem’s life and work in this enchanting documentary. The two men have much in common: wit, wisdom and talent, all shot through with deep humanity and Yiddishkeit.

Sholom Aleichem was a pioneer of modern Jewish literature. His dozens of enduring characters – Tevye the Milkman, Motl the Cantor’s Son, and Menachem Mendl – personify the “shtetl Jews” for whom humor and pathos were two sides of the same Yiddish coin.

Theodore Bikel, whose career encompassed more than 150 screen roles and countless stage and musical productions, was the foremost interpreter of Sholom Aleichem’s work. Bikel played Sholom Aleichem’s most famous character, Tevye the Milkman, on stage and created and starred in two celebrated musical plays about the great Yiddish author.
